A major international study led by the BBC and European Broadcasting Union found that AI assistants routinely misrepresent news content across all languages and platforms tested. Analyzing over 3,000 responses from ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity, researchers discovered 45% had significant issues, including sourcing problems and accuracy errors. With 7% of online news consumers using AI assistants, rising to 15% for under-25s, these systematic failures pose serious risks to public trust in news and democratic participation.
