In November 1988, Cornell graduate student Robert Tappan Morris accidentally created the first major internet worm while trying to measure the internet's size. The Morris worm infected 10% of the internet within 24 hours, affecting around 6,000 systems and causing massive slowdowns at prestigious institutions like Harvard, MIT, and NASA. Though unintentional, it resulted in millions in damages and led to Morris being prosecuted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, receiving probation and community service.
