Dan Simmons was born in Peoria, Illinois in 1948 and became an elementary school teacher for 18 years, creating innovative programs and becoming a Colorado Teacher of the Year finalist. He left teaching in 1987 to become a full-time author, writing 31 novels and short story collections across multiple genres, winning numerous awards including the Hugo Award. His debut novel Song of Kali won the 1986 World Fantasy Award, and his novel The Terror was adapted into an AMC series. He is survived by his wife Karen, daughter Jane, and grandchildren Milo and Lucia.
