A new scientific review by over 30 researchers argues that striped floors, flickering LEDs, and repetitive geometric patterns in modern environments can cause headaches, eye strain, and nausea because they force the brain to work harder than it evolved to handle. The human visual system developed to process natural scenes efficiently, but artificial patterns deviate from these natural mathematical patterns, creating metabolic overload in the visual cortex. People with autism, ADHD, migraines, and other neurological conditions are disproportionately affected, possibly due to reduced ability to suppress overactive neural signals. The research suggests design changes like reducing contrast in repetitive patterns and avoiding striped surfaces could help reduce visual discomfort.
