Sixteen years after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill, deep-sea ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico show no sign of recovery. A study led by Tracey Sutton found sharp declines of 60-70% in deep-pelagic fish, crustaceans, and squid, including krill and lanternfish. Researchers consider the oil spill and dispersant use the most likely cause, and say the collapse may trigger lasting ecosystem changes.
